LILEE Systems Receives US FCC Certification for First 220 MHz Software-Defined Radio

SANTA CLARA, Calif., February 19, 2013 – LILEE Systems, the leading provider of advanced communication systems designed exclusively for rail and rail transit industries, today announced that its TransAir PTC-3000 series Locomotive Radio has been approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) as the first 220 MHz Software-Defined Radio (SDR). The LILEE Systems TransAir PTC series delivers reliable and efficient IP network connectivity for mission-critical rail control and communications applications. The TransAir PTC SDR radio is certified for operation under US FCC Part 80, 90 and 95 rules, making it ideal for operation in the 216 to 222 MHz band. The transceiver can easily be software configured for standards- based or proprietary communications protocols, providing broad interoperability.

“This latest achievement marks another important milestone for LILEE Systems as we aggressively work to meet our customers’ and partners’ needs for reliable, high-performance IP- based communications systems,” said Dr. Jia-ru Li, CEO of LILEE Systems. “The TransAir series targets the heavy freight and passenger rail market as well as the growing needs of cost- sensitive rail transit agencies looking for flexibility and long-term maintainability.”

A key advantage of the FCC SDR certification is the ability to modify radio frequency and transmitter output characteristics through software, without the necessity of FCC re-certification. For customers planning to deploy radio systems in areas where radio spectrum is costly and highly congested, this designed-in extensibility can mean better performance and communications availability. The LILEE Systems TransAir radio enables dynamic switching between frequency bands, choice of modulation modes, data rates and coding methods, finely variable transmitter output power, and can support both open standards, including the emerging IEEE 802.15.4p protocol, as well as the several proprietary communications schemes in use today. The TransAir series also incorporates cellular 3G/4G and Wi-Fi communications for high- volume data transfer and GPS for precision location services.

“A significant segment of the rail transportation industry has settled on the 220 MHz band to implement the wireless component of their Positive Train Control systems. This piece of spectrum operates under a mix of different service rules, each with its own characteristics. Some transit systems have already found that the cost of spectrum is a significant impediment to deploying their rail communications systems. A software defined radio, certified for operation anywhere in the band, means that the customer can better control their spectrum acquisition costs while providing expandability,” stated Rod Diridon, executive director of the Mineta

Transportation Institute and chair of the advisory board for the US High Speed Rail Association.

The LILEE TransAir PTC series Locomotive Radio provides wireless IP connectivity with seamless handover between 220 MHz, cellular 3G/4G, and Wi-Fi. Available in a variety of form factors for onboard as well as fixed usage, the transceiver manages mission-critical data links between the train’s on-board computer, trackside equipment and network infrastructure. It is an integral component of LILEE Systems’ complete rail communications architecture, including the WMS-2000 series for wayside messaging service, and the LMC-5000 series, managing IP mobility from the back office.
