LILEE Systems Introduces End-to-End Positive Train Control Communications System For Rail Industry

SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 21, 2011 – LILEE Systems, the leading provider of advanced communication systems designed exclusively for the railroad industry, today announced the availability of its TransAir PTC family of products. TransAir is a robust end-to-end Positive Train Control (PTC) communication system designed to capture evolving interoperability standards and assist rail companies in achieving their compliance goals. Featuring industry-first technology developed by a team of leaders in the wireless and networking industry, TransAir PTC provides a future-proof upgrade path as PTC standards are released to the industry.

PTC systems feature integrated command, control, communications, and information networks for controlling train movements with flexibility, precision, and efficiency. Utilizing the most advanced Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology available today, LILEE Systems’ TransAir PTC products enable rail companies to significantly reduce the time and cost associated with implementing a traditional communications system. This provides an attractive solution for rail companies committed to meeting the December 31, 2015 deadline set by the United States Congress to implement PTC.

LILEE Systems TransAir PTC Family

TransAir mobility products feature solutions to enable broadband communications from low mobility radios for subways to high mobility radios for high speed rail systems. As part of this product solution, the TransAir PTC family is designed based on an interoperable train control (ITC) architecture, enabling the wireless network transport to allow seamless roaming and persistent communication between the three primary office, wayside and locomotive networks.

  • TransAir Wayside: Provides communication to and from the Wayside Interface Units (WIU) located at the wayside bungalows.
  • TransAir Locomotive: Provides communication between the on-board computer, wayside locations, and the back office servers. It features options for integrated WiFi interfaces, 220MHz PTC radio, and a 3G connection for backup.
  • TransAir Base Station: Provides communication among the mobility controllers, locomotive, and wayside radios.
  • TransAir Mobility Controller: Provides radio device management with roaming control and enables a conduit between the trackside network and the back office servers. The Mobility Controller also provides a comprehensive web-based management to allow all radio devices to be managed centrally from this graphical console. It is a one-stop-shop for all radio management tasks.

• Yard Radio: Provides high-power WiFi 802.11a/b/g radio connectivity for short-range and low-speed applications.

Software Defined Radio (SDR) - Key to Meeting 2015 Deadline

Future-Proofing Equipment to Support Evolving Standards

The core of LILEE Systems' technology is state-of-the-art software defined radio (SDR) technology, originally created to improve interoperability between different wireless networks and devices. SDR technology is comprised of both software and hardware that can be dynamically reconfigured to enable communications between a wide variety of changing communications standards, protocols, and radio links. Multi-mode, multi-band, and multi- functional wireless devices and network equipment can be created and dynamically reconfigured, enhanced, and upgraded without costly hardware upgrades.

LILEE Systems’ configurable radio technology enables rail companies to deploy “future-proof” equipment that can be updated as new technologies become available. It is also capable of supporting modern network protocols to leverage investments in existing equipment.

"With the PTC deadline increasing the pressure on the rail industry to implement systems that are both efficient and reliable, new networking technologies offer significant operational and cost advantages," said Jia-Ru Li, CEO, LILEE Systems. "We are pleased to contribute to the options available today, with an advanced, end-to-end communications system designed specifically to capture the rail industry's interoperability requirements. With our extensive experience in wireless and network technologies behind us, we can deliver a suite of products and services that help our customers meet the PTC deadline in a cost-effective and reliable manner."

LILEE Systems also today announced that it has named former Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta to its board of directors.
