LILEE Systems Announces the Availability of the Industry's First Commercially Available Wayside Status Relay Service (WSRS)

APTA 2013 RAIL CONFERENCE, PHILADELPHIA, PA, June 4, 2013 – LILEE Systems, a member of the American Passenger Transportation Association (APTA) and the leading provider of advanced communication systems designed exclusively for the rail and rail transit industry, today announced the availability of the first commercially available interoperable, ITC- compliant Wayside Status Relay Service. WSRS is the latest addition to LILEE Systems’ portfolio of messaging system products and services designed to provide rail transit agencies with interoperable solutions that enable them to meet the Rail Safety Improvement Act (RSIA) mandated deadline of December 31, 2015 for Positive Train Control (PTC).

Rail transit agencies face significant financial, schedule, and programmatic challenges to address the letter and spirit of the RSIA mandate. Existing proprietary communication systems often have high entry and on-going support licensing costs, negatively impacting an agency’s finances. LILEE Systems reduces the cost and complexity of installation and maintenance with its industry-leading interoperable PTC platform comprised of the WSRS, IEEE 802.15.4p draft- standard-compliant 220 MHz base and locomotive radios, Wayside Messaging Servers (WMS), and back office mobile IP controllers.

The WSRS enhances system performance by providing relay, switchover, and status

subscription features to the rail communications network, and establishing seamless interoperability with neighboring foreign roads which may also implement the interoperable messaging system. The WSRS accepts Edge Messaging Protocol (EMP) messages from Wayside Interface Units (WIUs) in the field and forwards those messages to interested and authorized parties, based on configured parameters in the WSRS. The WSRS also manages subscriptions to WIUs for other applications, and can be configured to extend the network's coverage via 220 MHz, cellular, Wi-Fi or other wireless media, which can be especially beneficial where licensed spectrum is unreasonably expensive, or when large geographical obstructions could otherwise inhibit peer-to-peer radio communications.

“Designed in full accordance with ITC interoperability requirements, our commercially available WSRS is currently being implemented to support interoperability between one of the nation’s largest rail transits and two Class I railroads,” said Kevin Nichter, director of product line management for LILEE Systems. “Other transit systems and railroads can lower their PTC implementation risk by using a well-proven product such as the LILEE Systems WSRS.”
